Grab the Reins (Possession in Pathfinder II)

ShadowshardAs we discussed yesterday, the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Occult Adventures rulebook cleared up a lot of confusion around the possession mechanic of several creatures and spellcasters.

Will Versus Will

Possession as a core mechanic has cleared up a lot of complex interactions:

  • Possession beats Mind Control: The mind of the host is sequestered and cannot control the body, so if it is charmed, compelled or dominated it can’t reach its own body any longer to act on the controller’s commands.
  • Possession has clearer interactions with Divination: Most spells indicate the possessor’s presence as the normal target would be unless it interacts with locations in which case it fails unless the spell is discern location or a more powerful effect.
  •  Possessing Creatures Force One Another Out: A possessor who attempts to control an already possessed creature forces the possessor to resist the possession effect. If it fails, the former possessor is ejected from the host.
