Today we are continuing previewing the content of our upcoming release of Hyraeatan, City in Shadow. The demiplanar metropolis is ruled by a Council comprised of fourteen rival factions known as the Parities. The Parities espouse the titular balance of Light and Dark as such the claims seven of each. Of the Dark Parities, few are so recognizable as the Icegrave Enclave–Keepers of the Isle Graves of the Icetomb
Nicknames: Frostmouners, Ghouls, Shambles, Wights
Beliefs: The Icegrave Enclave is most often stereotyped as morbid and obsessive with the nature of death. Their Parity is driven to understand the varied states of the Dead. Explaining that both honoring the remains and consorting with those troubled souls who remain locked in the Ether grants the secrets knowledges too important to leave alone. Due to this the Parity has claimed oversight of the funerary needs of Hyraeatan.
The scarcity of arable lands for food production and disproportionate need for physical interment and disposal the Parity has created an unusual solution. Given control over the docks of Wetlake, the Icegraves have taken to freezing the dead into massive chunks of ice which are then ferried to be fused an island of similar floating tombs. Sculpting wildly fantastic icy seplechures for those who can afford it and offer copper freezes to handle the poorer citizenry in large mass gravebergs.
The Icegraves hold that Memory of the dead and their lives is the only true way to ensure progress. As such they offer tours of the Icetomb and services for magically questioning the fallen there. In times of peril they have been known to animate remains to help the Ashborn defend the city, despite tension between the two Parities. Lastly the Parity offers compassionate counseling and assistance in greiving, a process which they call Abandonment.
Primary Facilities: The Tower of Ice is as much crypt as official headquarters. The dead of the Parity, unliving and true, are said to rest in its icy depths. Providing counsel to the greaving, interviewing important death’s families, or being questioned by seers the Parity has lost very little knowledge to the Chill Embrace since its founding. The Docks of the Wetlake are held in trust for the city and the Enclaves dockmasters make certain no trade vessels disrupt their interment efforts.
Allied and Enemy Parities: Among the Parities of Light, the Ashborn tend to despise the needless clinging the remains of the fallen and frequently lobby to have the Icetomb broken down and melted. These posturings never get far due to the needful services offered by the Enclave. The House of Heights sees the Icegraves as cowards who have surrendered to death. The Dark Parities find the Bookbinders furious at the Icegraves refusal to allow casual admittance to question the dead for knowledge, while the Temple of Coin enjoys are strong relationship with them due to their management of the Wetlake Docks. The Hands of Onus respect the Parities commitment to the Dead.
Desired Membership: Recruiting by the Icegrave Enclave focuses on the obvious, necromancers and knights devoted to death, ice specialists and transmuter sculptors, and morticians and other funerary professionals. Spiritualists are of particular note as that the Enclave favors those who can speak to the liminal dead.
Rewards: Members are allowed access to the Enclaves libraries of the Scrolls of the Dead for nominal costs. They also are allowed preference birthing and dock services leading a surprising number of merchants to join the Enclave to save on operating costs. Of course the Enclave also offers free basic interment to member when they pass.
Denials: The Icegrave Enclave exclusively forbids members to cremate the dead. Members whose religious beliefs require this are not denied it but are informed that all monies and benefits are severed immediately on the burning of their corpses.
