For those not familiar with Lost Spheres Publishing, we produce and highly advocate 3rd party product for Pathfinder and do a lot of work about the meta-balance of highly permisive games. But despite our feelings, sometimes a GM just doesn’t want to allow 3rd party product… *sad face*

So if we are so constrained, can we still have a “speedster” for Pathfinder? We say yes. And for today’s Paizo only build we are going with… eldritch scion! It will have a lot in common with yesterday’s version but have some fun twists.

Well, our options for benchmarks are probably one of three: Barbarian (Enhanced Move and damage acceleration), monk (attack acceleration, movement augments) or rogue (scout archetype for damage boosts related to movement).

For base race we are going to go with tiefling for a whole lot of reasons.

Base Build:

1st Level – tiefling (rakshasa-spawn) magus (eldritch scion – fire bloodline)

Here’s what we start with:

  • Like yesterday’s youxia build expeditious retreat will be our base speed effect.
  • Speed up with Alternate Racial Trait: Fiendish Sprinter Some tieflings have feet that are more bestial than human. Whether their feet resemble those of a clawed predator or are the cloven hooves common to many of their kind, tieflings with this trait gain a 10-foot racial bonus to their speed when using the charge, run, or withdraw actions. This racial trait replaces skilled.
  • 2 attacks at 1st level with Alternate Racial Trait: Maw or Claw Some tieflings take on the more bestial aspects of their fiendish ancestors. These tieflings exhibit either powerful, toothy maws or dangerous claws. The tiefling can choose a bite attack that deals 1d6 points of damage or two claws that each deal 1d4 points of damage. These attacks are primary natural attacks. This racial trait replaces the spell-like ability racial trait.
  • If you don’t want class you could go for a Speed Boost with Alternate Racial Trait: Once per day, you can exhibit a burst of speed, moving as if your base land speed were 50 feet for one move action. (Replaces spell-like ability, but we really recommend claws!)
  • Run will probably be our first feat.
  • Shocking grasp is a likely good second effect for our big “thunder punch.”
  • Mystic Focus gives us our bloodrage powers which allows our second round to do fire bonus damage. A little hefty on the action economy but not terrible.
  • If you feel like using Overrun, you might need a different stat array than below but we don’t recommend it.

Stats:

Generally with a standard point buy (if you have to use one) probably looking at:

Str 10 Dex 16 (Racial +2) Con 10  Int 10 Wis 8 (Racial -2) Cha 18 (Racial +2) = Dex is a good speedster stat and Cha is our bread and butter for everything else.

Advancement: Consider the flavor of your speedster and how you want to develop it. Mystic focus allows spell combat to deliver shocking tough with your claw attack. At 3rd you will need to take Natural Spell Combat (Ex) as your first Magus Arcana to allow all class features to interact with your claws.

5th Level – tiefling (rakshasa-spawn) magus (eldritch scion – fire bloodline)

Here’s what we are probably looking at now:

  • 2nd level spells like bladed dash and spider climb to help with speedster thematics.
  • Alternate tiefling favored class bonus gives us more points in our eldritch pool.
  • Eldritch Pool now functions as a standard Arcane Pool allowing us to enhance our claw attacks further.
  • Pool Strike (Su) is another boom-punch option.
  • Favorable combinations of Spell Combat and natural attacks will offer many action arrays that will simulate more than standard actions for our speedster.

Stats (Before Magic Items):

Str 10 Dex 16 (Racial +2) Con 10  Int 10 Wis 8 (Racial -2) Cha 19 (Racial +2, level +1) = Nothing much changing here.

Advancement: We gain access to 3rd level spells shortly thereafter this stop allowing us to grab burst of speed and hasteForce punch might also be a good effect to terminate a super-speed rush. At 8th level our speed gets an un-typed +30′ to land-speeds which is when this blazing blur really hits stride. Speed bursts of 70′ pre-haste and well over 120′ if you are running both haste and burst of speed (600′ on a run!) with no attack of opportunity!

10th Level – tiefling (rakshasa-spawn) magus (eldritch scion – fire bloodline)

Here’s what we are probably looking at now:

Stats (Before Magic Items):

Str 10 Dex 16 (Racial +2) Con 10  Int 10 Wis 8 (Racial -2) Cha 20 (Racial +2, level +2) = Nothing much changing here.

Advancement: 4th level spells open up here and we can flavor our speedster with them quite a bit. Invisibility, greater (too fast to see),  pellet blast (throwing things super fast), and shield of dawn (super-hot from friction) are all decent speed-effects.

15th Level+ – tiefling (rakshasa-spawn) magus (eldritch scion – fire bloodline)

Here’s what we are probably looking at now:

  • Bladed dash, greater IS your focal spell here, allowing dizzying amounts of attacks against properly arrayed opponents.
  • Quickened Magic (Su) now allows for double bladed dash, greater and similar magic allowing your character to attack running by and remaining frustratingly far away from other melee characters.
  • Arcane Redoubt, Greater (Su) is another thematic follow-up that makes sense to super-speed dodge AoE attacks and the like.
  • Reflection (Su) might be another viable “super-speed” trope allowing you to cause enemy magic to return to its source.

Advancement: Dimensional blade and overland flight round out our “speed force” allowing easy hits and running on liquid and air. Fire snake might do for the ground burning behind you. Should you get to 19th level, Greater Spell Access should allow you to fill in speed effects from the wizard list.

Our 15th level speedster eldritch scion clocks in well against his peers meeting high bursts speed, moderate to high damage to all three of our benchmarks (barbarian, monk and scout) and has one of the longest base speed workdays we have seen yet!
