New Year’s is right around the corner and that means New Games. As you set up your new party of awesome, you might be looking to take on the iconic role of the rogue. Sometimes, you want something new. If the rogue role is something you enjoy or going to be taking on for the next game, there are some great third party options out there for filling the place of this shadowy damage dealer. With so much out there in the ocean of third party awesome we figured we could point out a few for you. Today, we look at the shadow assassin from Rogue Genius Games.
Midnight Striker – The Shadow Assassin
For Whom the Bell Tolls – (Conditional Damage Boost): Stings like a Bee! Deadly focus represents the shadow assassins core conditional damage boost adding a Wisdom derived bonus to damage against a dedicated target until they are dead. The bonus applies only to specific weapons appropriate to the trade. The ease of use is exchanged for a fifteen minute recharge period to regain this potent class feature. The ability is more reliable than sneak if slightly less impressive in terms of damage bloom. Add on “daggermaster” which adds bonuses to attack and damage (and actually works for most light weapons, bolas and shuriken) and this class starts to gain on rogue. Add in greater deadly focus (x2 your level bonus to another kill target) and you start to match rogue blow for blow. Further customization may even move damage potential higher.
Midnight Moves – (Skill Use): Lord of the Dance. Most of the traditional rogue skill set is present aside from the notable absence of the Use Magic Device (against nothing dangerously curious can’t fix) but where Shadow Assassin excels is stealth. Shadowmeld, a core class feature grants bonuses to Stealth in dim areas… then also to Acrobatics, Bluff, Climb, Escape Artist or Sleight of Hand… the adds concealment… self-generated darkness… gaseous form… and even ethereal movement. Rogue may have just been lapped. You won’t even miss those 2 ranks less a level, you’ll be too busy wiping blood off your stuff.
Slippery Shadows – (Damage Mitigation): Find me first. As strong as shadow assassin is at avoiding detection, you best rely on that to avoid your enemies because while it retains Evasion it gains its two levels later. Uncanny Dodge requires uses of your customize-able shadow talents and might not be your highest priority. Over all the defensive options are slightly sub-rogue, but with all the killing who will be left to threaten you long?
New Year’s Kiss – (Customize-able Advancement): Girl (or Boy) in every port! Shadow styles and shadow talents can combine in dozens of play variations although shuriken style (augmented shadow planar-infused missiles) and shadowblade style (summoned light weapons) were personal favorites. Options to multi-weapon fight and work spells into your style exist as well. Talents allow further specializations into skills or styles and even can add area-of-effect damage to certain attacks.
Shadow assassin rates well in damage boost, skill focus, and customize-able options relative to the rogue’s role in metagame! Heart not won over? The Midnight Strikers concludes tomorrow, Rogue-ing the New Year Midnight Strikers: The Paramour (T-Minus 0).
