We here at Lost Spheres love shapeshifters. Conceptually, the group of characters that encompases the ability to take on another form is pretty broad particularly including third-party options. With so many choices out there we thought some of you wouldn’t mind a few suggestions for your next morphic champion. Today, we look at Adventure-a-Week.com‘s underterror from the Underworld Classes series. Over the next week or so we’d like to showcase a few different ‘shifter character concepts from third party companies for those looking for a little change before the new year. Welcome to the 12 days of Shift-mas!
Shapeshifting: The Underterror
While comparable yet again to our benchmark wild shaping druid, most third-party friendly people are eventually going to compare underterror more to metamorph and even masquerade reveler as that it another evolution driven shapeshifter. Like metamorph there are some thematic restrictions but more mutability. This class was designed for an evil culture but could be subject to a little revisionist history and find its way to almost any table as a PC class for any alignment (you might need to edit its spell-like abilities though).
Under the Tree – Dozens of shiny, well-themed presents with a lifetime guarantee and a generous return policy. Seriously, as evolution masters go, the underterror is hard to beat. It has a campaign specific alignment restriction for non-good but any number of re-envisionings for the class could change this from setting to setting. The abilities lean toward the dark and tentacle-y but again evolutions provide a stunning array of options. All that said, the class has built in change shape (at will alter self), evolution surge, and a handful of evolution reallocation powers that give it the best of both worlds in variability and staying power. Additionally, there are a number of themed spell-like abilities as well.
Battery Life – Fusion Reactor. Again, we see a class with lasting evolutions and staying power that will even run wild shape into the ground. While the class leans toward attack routine balance with required secondary attack slots and other restrictions, they hardly detract from its generous and sustained mutability.
Wrapping Fees – Mother May I. Again, like metamorph, see if your GM allows any ported eidolon evolution-related feats. If not, and you are enjoying your spell-like abilities, there are a pair of strong feats tied to them as well. Lastly, this class again might want some of the Path of War feats for Broken Blade discipline maneuvers to enhance natural attack routines.
Under the Mistletoe – Gold Band. Given the class’ evolution driven power AND scaling mutability, it is a keeper unless you are sprinkling melee levels to up your attack game or maybe dipping martial classes from Path of War to get some stance and maneuver support for your natural attacks. Otherwise its a life long romance you aren’t likely to regret.
Comeback tomorrow for the next Present of Shift-mas! Day 2 – the Godling! Don’t forget ANY shapeshifter can benefit in Mythic games from the Master-of-Shapes path from Mythic Paths of the Lost Spheres and you can get it on: RPGNow or Paizo or d20.pfsrd.com!
