12 Days of Shift-mas: Day 4 – The Thaumaturge

We here at Lost Spheres love shapeshifters.  Conceptually, the group of characters that encompases the ability to take on another form is pretty broad particularly including third-party options. With so many choices out there we thought some of you wouldn’t mind a few suggestions for your next morphic champion.  Today, we look at Kyoudai Games’ thaumaturge,  from the Thunderscape World of Aden Campaign Setting. Over the next week or so we’d like to showcase a few different ‘shifter character concepts from third party companies for those looking for a little change before the new year.  Welcome to the 12 days of Shift-mas!

Shapeshifting: The Thaumaturge

The thaumaturge on casual examination is more similar to mimic oriented class like dilettante from Drop Dead Games or our own echo. However the base class refers to a built in skinning choice that includes animal spirit induced physical shifts that move the class into the shapeshifting pack. This is only stregnthened by new legend and aspect options in the Saints and Sinners expansion. Druids are likely to be better at most things, shifting included, but thaumaturge can use aspects conservatively to keep passive aspect powers for the entire day, and legends are only limited by which is active at any given time so they trump druid in versatility and long game.

Under the Tree – A pair of versatile, reusable presents and some fun tinsel. Thaumaturge operates off of two major ability components: aspects and legends. Aspect abilities tend toward modular abilities. Each can be discharged to greater effect or provide passive abilities like an aura of bless, conjured weapons or ramping damage bonuses per successful hit. Legends include quasi-class templates which add small groups of mechanics (smite or sneak attack for instance) while adjusting saves and BAB. Aspects and Legends interact to create your classes current form. Later abilities include acceleration for changing and re-rolls mechanics

Battery Life – Fusion Reactor. Thaumaturge never has to run out and when it does it is only by choice. Customizable daily awesome that can equal feral shifted forms or channeled dead spirits. The greatest thing about the class is the sheer number of possible origins and backstories it can work with and support. Shapeshifting warriors, waifish mediums and possessed outcasts could all be thaumaturges.

Wrapping Fees – Powerful Aspect and Efficient Inspiration are good enough feats to take every time you can. Add in Saints and Sinners new Ancestral Guidance and you might want to see if your GM is allowing Drawbacks for bonus feats. Seriously.

Under the Mistletoe -By the fives. Yes, thaumaturge is dippable, but there are better ways to go. If you must consider multiclassing you should probably pair it with another Charisma-driven class. Consider that pretty much everything gets better in this class at 5th (swap out bound legends for new ones) and 10th level (advanced aspects). Given the goodness of these milestones, lifelong commitment is probably the best idea.
