12 Days of Shift-mas – Day 9: The Egoist

Master-of-Shapes---Final-BlogWe here at Lost Spheres love shapeshifters.  Conceptually, the group of characters that encompases the ability to take on another form is pretty broad particularly including third-party options. With so many choices out there we thought some of you wouldn’t mind a few suggestions for your next morphic champion. Our first third-party contender is Dreamscarred Press’ psychometabolic discipline master, the Egoist.  Over the next week or so we’d like to showcase a few different ‘shifter character concepts from third party companies for those looking for a little change before the new year.  Welcome to the 12 days of Shift-mas!

Shapeshifting: The Egoist

The Egoist psion specialist can match druids in some ways, and possibly surpass them in others regarding the level of its shapeshifting and its relative balance within the class:

Under the Tree – One of biggest shiny boxes. Egoists suffer some of the same issues that the Transmuter did in that our best shapeshifting comes from our primary power (“spell”) selection group. So it is our major ability body. That said the metamorphosis power family  is a tight, concise group with HIGH variability.  Add in built in healing and shared effect and the potential of this class as a shifter supreme starts to surface nicely.

Battery Life – Music-box again. How long does our shift last?  Usually a 1 minute per level. Not a ton of staying power but insane variability of the power suite is likely to result in more shifts per day for more specialized results. If you are usually in a “long work day party” consider a wilder instead of a psion, you will have to use feats to gain your best egoist metamorphosis powers but you might burn less power with surging.

Wrapping Fees – One does want a splash of color. Improved Metamorphosis should probably be your 3rd level feat. Pretty much always. It saves a minimum of 2 power points per shapeshift and makes EVERY time you use the power more useful. The rest is mostly season to taste as that you will get variable mileage and have to worry about psionic focus with Extend Power and the like, but may be worth a look.

Under the Mistletoe –  Starter Marriage. Much like alchemist you may want to say goodbye to psion but this time as soon as level 6. Hello metamorph! Free shapeshifts! Supernatural powers including breath weapons! Mid shift redistribution of changed abilities! And yes…. Permanent durations. Boom. Some people may find this is the “drop-the-mic” progression of shapeshifting. And it is certainly one of the best… but there are so many more.

Comeback tomorrow for the next Present of Shift-mas! Day 8 – the Taskshaper! Don’t forget ANY shapeshifter can benefit in Mythic games from the Master-of-Shapes path from Mythic Paths of the Lost Spheres and you can get it on: RPGNow or Paizo or d20.pfsrd.com!
