We here at Lost Spheres love shapeshifters. Conceptually, the group of characters that encompases the ability to take on another form is pretty broad particularly including third-party options. With so many choices out there we thought some of you wouldn’t mind a few suggestions for your next morphic champion. The alchemist, our base class Doctor Jekyll, is a premier example of the “limited-focus-shifter”–a shapechanger who over their advancement comes to craft a specific, effective alternate form. Over the next couple weeks we’d like to showcase a few different ‘shifter character concepts from Paizo and other companies for those looking for a little change before the new year. Welcome to the 12 days of Shift-mas!
Shapeshifting: The Alchemist
In the Pathfinder base class family our potion-pounding Alchemist can stand on its own against the druid regarding the level of its shapeshifting and its relative balance within the class:
Under the Tree – One of the many shiny boxes. Alchemists primary aspect of extracts are relatively untouched by their secondary mutagen feature which is were we look at most of the inherent “shifting” of the class. Add in bombs and crafting with brew potion and we have a pile of goodies including our mutative drinky-drinks.
Battery Life – Duracell. How long does our shift last? Usually a 10 minutes per level. Not bad. But wait how many mutagens do we get… 1. Eeek. That is going to be an issue after our first big encounter requiring a shift. You are probably going to need to diversify in the low-level game to survive this limitation. But if you hang on til 14th it goes 1 hour per level and meets back up with druids super-duration for your primary shift.
Wrapping Fees – Oh so many shiny balls. Discoveries can cause your mutagen to shape exactly the beautiful perfect monster you want to be when you up end that bottle. You can get discoveries with extra discovery. As often as you want. And you may want to. You can have exactly the fire-resistant-clawed-nightmare-in-a-beverage you want to have on tap.
Under the Mistletoe – Starter Marriage. In a rare case with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, we get a shapeshifting option that favors multi-class with a Paizo generated prestige class: At level level 8, the focused shifting alchemist is probably well-served to leave his base class behind and blossom into the fullness of: master chymist Seriously with the roleplaying goldmine of mutagenic form, extra uses of mutagen via mutate, and specific advanced mutagen options this class progression catches up to druids pretty well and likely with an end result FAR more to your liking. You even get to keep your bombs.
Comeback tomorrow for the next Present of Shift-mas! Day 9 – the Egoist! Don’t forget ANY shapeshifter can benefit in Mythic games from the Master-of-Shapes path from Mythic Paths of the Lost Spheres and you can get it on: RPGNow or Paizo or d20.pfsrd.com!
